Elephant Toothpaste

Kids love to watch things explode! Check out a fun reaction for kids to beg for over and over again!

Materials Needed:
Empty plastic water bottle
~1 tbsp. Dawn dish soap
1 tbsp. Dry Yeast
Food Coloring
3 tbsp. warm water
1/2 cup Hydrogen Peroxide
Funnel

1. Put empty water bottle in the bottom of a tin tray.
2. Fill the water bottle up with hydrogen peroxide and dish soap.
3. In a separate cup, mix the warm water and yeast with a spoon.
4. Very soon after you mix up the water and yeast, pour the new yeast mixture into the water bottle using a funnel. Make sure you take the funnel out as the toothpaste grows!

Mistakes to avoid....
Do NOT buy rubbing alcohol. We did the experiment on Tuesday, but ended up not getting to watch any results because I bought alcohol instead of hydrogen peroxide. Oops!! As a teacher, though, I was able to spin my mistake into a learning opportunity and we talked about why this failed.

video
I am terribly sad, but I missed the first 15 second of this video!!
I missed the growing toothpaste and oozing out of the top.
Hopefully, this video still gives you a good idea!

Things to Do Indoors With Kids When It Is Raining- Guest Blog

Hi!
I am Faith from 1st Grade Fantabulous! One of my best blogging buddies is your friend Jessica.  She asked me if I would like to do a guest blog and I told her I would.  The only problem is what in the world do you blog about in the summer?  I know teachers do lots of extra work during the summer, but I also know that you need a little down time, especially if you have a couple of little guys running around at home.

Anyway, I bounced around a few ideas and I thought, "If I were a teacher and a mom, what would I want?"  So, here it is - a Top 3 Kid Projects to Do "IF" it is raining!    Seriously, I remember growing up, rain always shows up at the worst possible moments and within two hours my sister and I were both in our rooms with the, "Don't come out of your room until your Dad gets home."  Since I'm sure naps aren't really an option here are a few things I grabbed off Pinterest that don't require you to be a supermom or a super teacher, but will be fun without costing a lot of money.

#1 - Build-A-Something
This is something fun to do at home or at school.  The best part is you have several options.

1. You can take toothpicks and marshmallows and let your kids see who can build the biggest building.  You can get both of these items usually for $1 a piece, so for $2 to $4 you can make everyone happy.

2. You can take random boxes, duct tape, paint, etc. and let your kids build robots.  Show them a few pictures on the Internet and then cut them loose.  They will LOVE it and it will keep them busy for hours.

I've done both of these ideas in my classroom and they turned out great!  For more information check out Pink and Green Mama and Craft Interrupted.  The best part is both of these sites have other things you can do to keep your kids entertained.

#2 - Slimy Science
One of the coolest things we did in my classroom this year was make slime.  All you need is water, Borax (You can get it at Walmart), and glue.  I used clear glue for my first batch, but white glue worked much better, so I suggest getting white glue.  Plus, it's around half the price.  You can also add food coloring or glitter, but you don't have to if you want to skip that part.

Give each of your kiddos two bowls each (I used plastic bowls) and have them mix 1/4 cup of water and 1/4 cup of glue with food coloring/glitter (optional).  Then, in the other bowl have your kiddos mix
1/4 cup of water and 1 teaspoon of Borax.  Make sure they mix it well.  Once it is mixed, combine the two bowls into one bowl.  At first, you will stir with a spoon and then you will use your hands.  Now you have slime!

#3 - Snowy Summer Day
Snow in the summer?  Is it possible?  Guess what?  It is!  Make sure the next time you go to the Dollar Store that you grab a bottle or two of cheap conditioner.  When I went, I grabbed one that smelled like coconut

.  Then, grab a couple of boxes of baking soda.  Oh, and while you are there, you may want to grab a cheap plastic table cloth because this can be a little messy.

Once you have all of your ingredients, mix 3 cups of baking soda and 1/2 a cup of conditioner in a pan.  After a few minutes of mixing, you will have a texture similar to snow.

If you want more information on this project, you can check out Mommas Fun World.  That's where I first saw the idea.

Now, if you finish ALL of those projects and it is still raining, it is definitely time for a Movie Night!  Let your kids build a gigantic pallet in your living room, pop some popcorn, grab some Dollar Store candy, and watch a fun movie.  You can also order pizza if you want.

Thanks for letting me hang out with you guys today.  I hope this comes in handy for you at some point this summer and saves you from at least one or two headaches.  Feel free to stop by and visit my blog.  Just click on the button at the top of the page and it will take you there.

Play-Doh

Materials Needed:
2 cups of Flour (we ended up adding about a cup more while mixing)
2 cups of warm water
1 cup of Salt
2 tablespoons of Vegetable Oil
Food Coloring
1 tablespoon of Cream of Tartar

Directions:
1. In a big bucket or bowl, pour flour, warm water, salt, oil, and cream of tartar. Add in your food coloring drops.
2. Stir with a mixing spoon for about a minute. Judging by the consistency of your play dough, add in necessary ingredients. If it is still pretty soupy, add more flour in. We ended up adding almost another cup in. Just add little by little until you get where you should be if you're comparing it to store bought Play-Doh.

Oops! Forgot to take pictures of us mixing it up!
Well, here is picture of the tub that we mixed it up in. :-)

The purple ended up to be a very heinous color, but the kids didn't notice for one second.
They still truly enjoyed their play time!

Five for Friday (June 14 Edition)

It is that wonderful time again for Doodle Bugs Teaching's Five for Friday post.
Time to reflect on 5 awesome things from this week!
It was an extremely busy week, so some of it, I'll just have to save and blog about next week (hint: look next week for fun science and art activities).

1. Here are the winners of my giveaway

 2. I finished my new classroom decor packs! 4 of them!

3. I am loving Cincinnati this week
This weekend was a very fun Cincinnati weekend. My boyfriend Mitch and I spent almost all of Saturday downtown before the game. Usually, we just go to the game and come home, but we decided to actually spend some time there!
Strolling around downtown.

I was playing around with my panoramic view! Little warped in the middle, but I don't mind it!

I visited my niece on Sunday for the first time in two weeks. She is too cute! I bought her a new set of bows this weekend. One pink, one blue, one green. Love them!
Loving the picture of her trying to figure out what life is all about in her Bumbo seat.

4. Blog Loving
Click that link to find me on Blog Loving. This summer, there will be a few changes on what apps we use to read our followed blogs, so check out this free option!

Arts and Crafts (Explore More Day 4)

Day 4 was the last day of Week 1!
We spent today doing more cutting and gluing with papers.

*Scrapbook Tree
1. Students trace their hand and arm on brown paper like a tree trunk. Glue onto white paper.
2. Give students three different pieces of scrapbook paper. I suggest different patterned papers. Students draw about 10 circles on each sheet.
3. Cut out the circles and glue onto their tree trunk like leaves.

*Watercolor Letter
We originally planned on doing the kid's names on their papers with paint, but then decided that was crazy, so we just did their first initial. And thank God we did! Peeling that tape off wore us out!

1. Teacher and helper put tape down on computer paper. We used both making tape and scotch tape. The scotch tape made a smoother line, but was harder to peel off. Both work!
2. Students water color any design over their letter.

*3-D Hand
This was tough for our kids, but I think that is because I was teaching K-2 aged students. But this would DEFINITELY be something amazing for the older kids doing art classes.

1. Students trace hands in pencil.
2. Use a ruler to draw straight lines behind the hand. When they get to their hand, they draw an arch connecting the lines.
3. Check out this PIN for more specific directions!
